Who We are

Our Story

Born from a passion for creating something truly special, our sweet candy blends light, melt-in-your-mouth goodness with flavor profiles that reflect local tastes and culture.

Three generations. One family recipe. One mountain that inspired it all.

honi (Hawaiian)

To kiss; a kiss. Traditionally, to touch noses in greeting. Also, to smell or catch a familiar scent.

Some family recipes are simply passed down. Others become part of a family's legacy.

Long before Mauna Kea Honi had a name, my grandmother was making this special meringue candy for her children. It became a cherished family tradition, shared at home and remembered for generations.

In 1984, she wrote down the recipe that would eventually become the foundation of Mauna Kea Honi. Her original version featured the classic flavor and finely chopped pecans and walnuts.

Years later, after my grandmother passed away, my mother discovered the handwritten recipe tucked inside her Bible while visiting her brothers on the mainland. She brought it home to Hawai'i, determined to continue our family's tradition.

As she made the recipe her own, she replaced the pecans and walnuts with locally grown macadamia nuts and created the first new flavor—Kona Coffee—while preserving everything she loved about my grandmother's original recipe.

Originally, my mother cut the candy into small squares. One day, my father suggested shaping them like the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Kea. The very next day, he emailed my mother a photograph of Mauna Kea covered in snow. Before she had the chance to open his message, he unexpectedly passed away.

When my mother later opened that email she immediately got chicken skin.

While sitting in the chapel beside my father's body, the name Mauna Kea Peaks came to my mother. When she later began selling the candy, that became the name of her business.

After my mother's passing, I realized that what my grandmother began and my mother so lovingly preserved deserved to continue. I also wanted the name to reflect what it had always meant to me, so I renamed the business Mauna Kea Honi.

To me, honi represents the memories, traditions, and love that are carried forward from one generation to the next.

Today, I continue the family tradition by honoring my grandmother's original recipe, my mother's craftsmanship and innovations, and by creating new flavors inspired by Hawai'i for future generations to enjoy.

From our flavors to our spirit, Hawai‘i influences everything we create. We honor local culture, community, and island traditions while sharing a taste of aloha beyond the islands.

What We Believe

This is how we view God, Jesus, the Bible, man, and many significant aspects of our faith. Firmly rooted in Scripture, our beliefs guide our decisions as a church.

The Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Because it was inspired by God, the Bible is truth without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our daily lives.

The Trinity

God has existed in relationship with Himself for all eternity. He exists as one substance in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Although each member of the Trinity serves different functions, they each possess equal power and authority.

The Father

God is great: He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, unchanging, completely worthy of our trust, and above all, Holy. It is in Him that we live, move and exist. God is good. He is our Father. He is loving, compassionate, and faithful to His people and His promises.

The Son

Jesus Christ is completely human but, at the same time, completely God. He is the only plan for bringing people who are far from God back into a right relationship with God. He lived a perfect life, so that He could be a substitution for us in satisfying God’s demands for perfection. He defeated death in His resurrection so that we can have life.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit’s presence assures us of our relationship with Christ. He guides believers into all truth and exalts Christ. He convicts people of their sin, God’s righteousness, and the coming judgment. He comforts us, gives us spiritual gifts, and makes us more like Christ.

Eternity

Man was created to exist forever. He will exist either eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is Heaven. Heaven and Hell are places of eternal existence.

Man

The Bible is God’s Word to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Because it was inspired by God, the Bible is truth without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our daily lives.

Salvation

God has existed in relationship with Himself for all eternity. He exists as one substance in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Although each member of the Trinity serves different functions, they each possess equal power and authority.

The Church

The Church is a local community of believers unified through faith in Christ. It is committed to the teachings of Christ and obeying all of His commands, and it seeks to bring the Gospel to the world. The Church works together in love and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ.
